The poem I wanted to write and just didn't know it until it was written.
"I play them by memory and when I am done
I will make it to you, my number one.
Reminded by songs of those summers
Played over and over like an old one hit wonder"
I can't possibly be the only person on the planet that dedicates a song to the lover(s) of the decade. Am I or AM I?
I mean, I'm not going to name names or dates or places. I mean I could, but a lady never tells. And if you happen to be smiling to yourself, you're welcome. ;-)
I mean for some it would be great fodder and for others, well that's just none of their damn business.
This poem has been spinning in my mind for years like a worn-out recording. It took me four months to write it when I finally thought I was brave enough to put words to the way a song can bring back so many feelings, thoughts, regrets... the list goes on, but love is where it always takes us back to.
Love. And the breakup that went with it.
The One that was forever and then got away.
You know the one. I would almost bet you have a song.
It plays in your head for no one else to hear
No warning or time to prepare
Memorized word for word like the way your lover's lips moved when they talked
In the melody you hear the sound of their voice playing back promises of love
Each instrument the parts of their body that bring home the tune
Your heart beating the rhythm though your body
Reminding of times spent making love
Not wanting the feeling to end, press rewind to feel it again.
Just like the first time. And the last time, too.
The memory waiting to fade with every listen
Bittersweet memories with a nostalgic undertone
Stop and feel the rush over and over again, played on repeat.
And if you are shaking your head saying
'Cuz you'd never consider singing along
Close your eyes for that three minutes and 39 seconds
Listen to the song
You might be the one hit wonder in someone else's playlist of love gone wrong.
