The Girl in the Song

Updated: 1 day ago

The one hit wonder no one knew was missing from the catalog. I have waited a long time for this one to be released.

A bonus track if you will. A hit single, not because it wasn't good enough to make side A but because it deserved to be more than an unappreciated side B. It wasn't just a love song, but a testament of love to be played over the nation's air waves in a desperate search to find the girl in the song.

It was nothing less than a number one in any Top 10 and it took the world by storm. A song of new promises to end the solitary journey of lonely twists and turns through an endless tunnel of darkness on a dead-end path paved by pain, only to suddenly crash into the arms of an eternal love that can't be unsung.

Heartfelt lyrics written with blood, a heart left in pieces, tied loosely together by hope and unwavering faith, buried in his soul; he believes she will know it is her he has been yearning for, and she will choose his love to mend their broken hearts.

She instinctively recognizes the lyrical chains of close calls and shackles of almosts. One by one, every scar carved in regret by unseen choices as written by life. She knowingly understands that none of the others that came before her could ever be the girl in the song.

Tales of heartbreak left behind in "what-could-have-beens" unrecognized by the void in his heart. Painting pretty pictures with their eyes of green or blue, their empty stares blurring his view. An array of box-bottle blondes and broken promises, smeared in red lipstick as soon as the next new thing came along. None of them meant to stay, but still believing they were the girl in the song.

The song has played, and the call has been heard, not just by her heart but it has been felt in her soul. The one with brown eyes and wild hair, nothing fake about her as she stands lost and alone in the crowd, naked in truth waiting to be found.

No red dress or fancy high heels but rather a hoodie, with jeans and boots. No diamonds or sequins, just a bold attitude that says she doesn't care what the world thinks. Plain to the eye by light of day, but she blindly shines a smoldering desire that burns red hot and her smile warns to setting more than just a heart on fire in the darkness of night. She is all he needs; she is the one.

The lights go down as the music starts to play, she closes her eyes knowing it is she he sees answering in the neon that shines upon him, guiding the search to this love of his life. She had finally stopped running so he could stop chasing, and for those three minutes and 50 seconds, she let herself believe she was the girl in the song.

It felt so right, she knew she couldn't be wrong. And to set the record straight, she can't help but think to herself, a girl can dream but do dreams ever come true? And with that the song ends; she turns off the radio and goes to sleep.

And for the next record... She is me. I'm the She.

Until next time,

T. McB
